An original artwork from Thomas Wharton. 42x42 // oil on linen.

Comments on the painting from Wharton:

To me, the title of this painting will always be, “The Painting Formerly Known As Saint Sebastian”. Because that’s what is was supposed to be. I was going to try a modern interpretation of St. Sebastian, a very important subject in art. But I was going to place him in a cosmic setting, something more cinematic in the way martyrs were handled in the videos of Bill Viola. I had planned was to have thin gold lines coming in from the sides of the painting to represent the arrows usually pictured, but as often happens, things changed. The painting was coming together nicely and I thought I’d better get the lines in before I locked everything in place. But, when I did, they just didn’t work. What looked good in the planned image, looked awkward in paint and added visual confusion. So, I took them out, and for a time kept putting stars in and taking stars out, while I tried to figure out what this image might work out to be. Then, I remembered that I sometimes have to let the painting speak and tell me what it needs. As a result of listening to the painting, it became something less about narrative and more about pure sensation.
