Comments on the painting from Wharton:
This is an example of how a painting can sometimes end up dictating what it winds up being. It began as an experiment in color and luminosity. All painting is about light, but the challenge always is how to arrive at something close to the brilliance and range of natural light. I’ve always enjoyed painting certain things on people—hands and ears especially. For this experiment, I decided to keep the image simple and use a hand, my own as it was easily available. In preparing the image, I accidentally hit a menu button in the program which reversed the image, color-wise and produced a blue hand. Finding this intriguing, I decided to paint the hand blue and give it an outside glow, as a challenge. As I worked on the image, It began to suggest power and in the traditional sense, a force at work. I added the spectral bar at the bottom to give meaning to what that force might be like. The title, Providence, came easily at that point.
